A Five-Day Geography Week for Primary Classes
For parents and teachers · 3 min read
This plan gives a primary class one geography lesson a day for a week, about 40 minutes each. Every day has a short starter, a main activity off-screen, a few minutes of play on the class screen or tablets, and a quick check. It works for a themed week, a world culture day, or the week before a school geography bee.
Before you start
- A large world map on the wall, or a projected one.
- Printed worksheets for the week (see the links at the end).
- A class screen or a few tablets. Flagoo needs no sign-up or student accounts.
- Optional: a string across the room to hang flags on as the week goes on.
Day 1: Our world (continents and oceans)
- Starter (5 min): ask “Where in the world have you been, or where does your family come from?” Pin a sticky note on the map for each answer.
- Main (20 min): name the seven continents and five oceans together. Children label a blank world map in pairs.
- Play (10 min): Continents & Oceans on the class screen. Take turns coming up to tap.
- Check (5 min): each child names one continent and one ocean on their way out.
Day 2: Reading maps
- Starter (5 min): compass points. Children point north, south, east and west in the classroom. (“Never Eat Soggy Waffles” helps with the order round the compass.)
- Main (20 min): draw a map of the classroom or playground with a key of symbols you agree on as a class.
- Play (10 min): Map Skills: compass points, map symbols and grid squares.
- Check (5 min): give a grid reference on the class map and ask what is in that square.
Day 3: Flags
- Starter (5 min): show five flags; what do the colours and pictures make children think of?
- Main (20 min): colour three flags from the printable sheet, then talk about flag families (crosses, stripes, stars).
- Play (10 min): a Group Flag Challenge: the same 8 flags for everyone, on tablets or in teams on the class screen, then compare scores.
- Check (5 min): hang the coloured flags on the class string.
Day 4: Countries and capitals
- Starter (5 min): Country of the Day on the big screen: its flag, capital and a few facts.
- Main (20 min): in small groups, children make a fact card for one country (flag, capital, continent, one animal, one food) and find it on the wall map.
- Play (10 min): Guess the Capital on Easy, or Which Country Am I? for older classes.
- Check (5 min): each group presents its country in one sentence.
Day 5: Class quiz and our own flag
- Quiz (20 min): run a Quiz Show on the class screen with teams: a round of flags, then capitals, then geography questions. Teams answer on paper and you keep the score on screen.
- Design (15 min): each child designs a flag for the class. Ask them to explain one colour and one symbol.
- Celebrate (5 min): print class certificates for everyone who took part.
Making it easier or harder
- Ages 5–7: stay on one continent, use Easy level, and do the starters orally.
- Ages 8–9: add a second continent and play on Medium.
- Ages 10–11: use the whole world on Hard, add Beat the Clock, and finish with a Geography Bee practice round.
- Children who finish early can play Learn & Explore, which has no scores and no timer.
