The story of this flag
Japan's flag is called the Hinomaru, which means "circle of the sun". The red circle is the Sun: Japan's own name, Nihon, means "origin of the sun", which is why it's called the Land of the Rising Sun. It was used for hundreds of years, and a law made it the official national flag in 1999.
