The story of this flag
India's flag was adopted on 22 July 1947, a few weeks before independence. Saffron stands for courage and strength, white for peace and truth, and green for faith and the growth of the land. The navy-blue wheel in the middle is the Ashoka Chakra, with 24 spokes, taken from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. Indians call the flag the Tiranga, which means "three colours".
