The story of this flag
The flag has 13 stripes for the 13 colonies that became the first states, and 50 stars, one for each state today. A star is added when a new state joins: the 50-star flag has flown since 4 July 1960, after Hawaii became a state. Americans call it the Stars and Stripes and celebrate Flag Day on 14 June, the day in 1777 when the first flag law was passed.
